Plastic Panels Hawaii products are commonly used to replace many of today’s mainstream building materials produced by the lumber, metal, fiberglass, and poly vinyl chloride (PVC) industries. For simplicity, and to allow for direct comparisons, the most common building products we compete with today are broken into their prospective industrial groups and discussed below.

 

Lumber Products:

We will place all wood and wood by-product building materials into the “lumber products” category. These materials have long been considered a standard in the industry, however, problems including termites, carpenter ants, other wood-infesting insects, rot, fire, mold, mildew, warping, and the weathering elements of nature, are not uncommon occurrences that must continually be dealt with. Metal Products:

Metals may be perceived by most people to be very durable construction materials. Of course the environment in which the metal products are used will certainly define the term “durable.”

 

Harsh environments contain many chemicals that may be very corrosive to metals. For example, when metal is used in agricultural applications including siding, roofing, partitions, stall dividers, etc., where animal excrement is present; rust, corrosion, and extreme deterioration of the metal is seen very quickly due to the high levels of uric acid and ammonia which are present. The same type of metal deterioration is seen in applications involving chemical plants, marine environments, waste management areas, and many other industrial settings.

 

The metal products that we directly compete with are typically manufactured from steel or aluminum, and are sometimes galvanized or painted to help retard deterioration. The list of products competing with us includes:

Fiberglass Products:

Fiberglass products are produced utilizing glass fibers, a resin, and a catalyst. The resulting material is a very strong but brittle product that is resistant to many chemicals, but susceptible to the atmospheric elements such as ultra violet light.

 

Although strength is a very important property that contributes to the durability of any material, if an impact or natural atmospheric elements destroy the structural integrity of a product, then that product is rendered useless. The very nature of fiberglass is not forgiving, and it is well known that impacts and atmospheric elements must be avoided if product longevity is to prevail.

 

Some of the fiberglass products available in the construction industry today include:

Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC) Products:

PVC (poly vinyl chloride) falls into the classification of materials called “plastics.” However, many different types of plastics are in use today, and each plastic type has specific and unique qualities, properties, and characteristics based on exact chemical make-up.

 

Many PVC building materials are manufactured using a process known as profile extrusion. For example, the very thin gauge opaque corrugated panels often seen in building supply establishments are examples of PVC profile extruded products. Vinyl siding that has been installed on so many homes is also a PVC profile extruded product.

 

PVC, when combined with additives, can be formulated to withstand the effects of weathering and ultra violet light damage for a period of time. Because it is a rather rigid material, even very thin sheets can are utilized with ease.

 

Like in fiberglass, brittleness is a characteristic synonymous with the rigid property of PVC. Although PVC is less brittle than fiberglass, cold temperatures increase the brittleness tremendously and a very slight impact can be devastating to the cold material, causing it to shatter like glass. A perfect example of how temperature affects PVC can be seen if you try to move a piece of PVC water pipe when the outside temperature is near freezing or below. The pipe becomes so brittle it will usually break with any attempted flexing of the pipe at all.

When we carefully look at all the products covered in the paragraphs above, the characteristics that should be avoided stand out. We should obviously strive for a raw material portraying none of the weaknesses exhibited by the competition. High Density Polyethylene stands out as the product of choice.

 

High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Products:

HDPE (high-density polyethylene) is a very strong and durable material. The inherent properties of HDPE avoid the product weaknesses discussed earlier, and when combined with our special “specific use” additives, HDPE provides high quality finished products possessing the following properties:
